Gunung Ibu: A Stratovolcano in Indonesia

Location and Features

Gunung Ibu is an active stratovolcano located along the northwest coast of Halmahera Island in Indonesia. It is a truncated stratovolcano with a number of large nested summit craters. The summit of the volcano is approximately 1,325 meters (4,347 feet) above sea level.

Recent Activity

Gunung Ibu has been the site of frequent volcanic activity in recent years. In 2021, the volcano erupted ash and gas, causing the closure of nearby airports. In 2022, the volcano erupted again, sending ash and debris several kilometers into the atmosphere.

The Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has issued a warning for people to stay away from the volcano and to be prepared for further eruptions.
